Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute, Hampton, Virginia

The Hampton University proton therapy center began with a vision. After the installation of the first proton cancer treatment center in 1990, Dr. William R. Harvey assembled a team to design what would become the 8th proton center in the US and one of the largest free-standing proton therapy facilities in the world.

Hampton’s design was unique at the time. The treatment floor was raised out of the basement so patients could enjoy natural daylight and views of the beautiful, forested setting outside. No longer were patients expected to descend to the basement for treatment.

Today, most proton centers take their cue from this innovative project and begin with placing the patient treatment level on-grade for the same healing environment benefits experienced at Hampton.
